Opiyo Okach - Julyen Hamilton

No Man's Gone Now
Spectacle — Auditorium Saint-Pierre des Cuisines

Choreographer: Julyen Hamilton
Performer: Opiyo Okach
Lighting: Clément Goguillot

Commissioned by a dancer from a choreographer, the solo No Man's Gone Now is the product of an authentic artistic collaboration between Kenyan dancer and mime Opiyo Okach and Julyen Hamilton, choreographer and master of improvisation. This 'instant' piece, choreographed live during the performance, explores the relationship of the soloist to autobiography and theatricality, two issues that run through Julyen Hamilton's work. The result is a solo of rare elegance and emotional power, a pure dance in which the grace and lightness of dancer Opiyo Okach unfolds in total freedom.

Dancer and choreographer Julyen Hamilton is one of Europe's most important improvisers. He is a frequent collaborator and regularly creates solos and group pieces for his company. His interest in music has led him to work with Barre Philips, Fred Frith, Lê Quan Ninh and Alfred Spirli.

Trained in physical theatre and mime in London, Opiyo Okach turned to dance on his return to Kenya in 1995. With the Congolese choreographer Faustin Linyekula, he created the company Gàara. Since then, he has sailed between Africa (Nairobi) and France. His creations are regularly co-produced and supported by the Ballet Atlantique under the direction of Régine Chopinot, and by the Centre Chorégraphique National de Montpellier under the direction of Mathilde Monnier.
