Grégory Gicquel

Born in 1975 in Saint Brieuc (France), he lives and works in Paris.

The work of Daniel Dewar and Grégory Gicquel is essentially sculptural. More precisely put, it is the point of convergence of several kinds of sculptural praxis. By borrowing equally from craft forms, manufactured objects and “classical” art techniques, it develops a decompartmentalized plastic language which posits its transversality as the basic condition. Their works have the charm of impromptu, fragmentary meetings, partly describing the world they belong to. They are more than a narrative, for they set up an atmosphere that gives glimpses of a way of seeing the world through an attitude.

The handmade factor is the stylistic figure which permeates all their output. At this Printemps de septembre, it is presented by way of a herd of hippopotami, on a 1:1 scale, made with kaolin. Dewar and Gicquel make light of the myth of artistic orginality, making use of elements, techniques and models, be they accessory or discredited, and give short shrift to the restricted dogmas of academicism.
