Myriam Mechita creates mirages. Her works crystallize the opposing forces of creation and destruction, life and death. But the body remains predominant in her sculptures and installations. Mainly animal bodies, when she borrows the “souls” (or forms) used by taxidermists, adding a covering of sequins and spangles, beads, mirror-polished chrome and aluminium, to the point of offering an illusion of absence of matter. As if to replunge them into a sort of cosmic bath challenging the experience of finiteness by restoring to them a magic and sacred dimension. Her monumental wall images stem from a similar liquefaction, and a similar alchemy: they spread in space and make the contrast between things physical and mental obsolete. Although it plays with immateriality, appearance and disappearance, this work remains extremely physical and dynamic. It encompasses the interplay of antagonistic forces which govern the world in a rare and precious poetic ritual.
