Warmedewar, 2007 © Philippe Cuxac, Nicolas Moulin, Ghazi Barakat

Born in 1970 in Paris, he lives and works between Paris and Berlin.

Fiction, a literary and film genre which he has a special soft spot for, is used by the artist to prop up screenplays and images of a future world, outcome of all our present fears, projections and ideologies.

Warmdewar – episode 1: a breakdown in a cyrogenic process leaves a miraculous survivor with amnesia after the shock of defrosting. He wanders around an apocalyptic decor looking for a sign of life…

What does the festival’s subtitle “Here where I am doesn’t exist” mean to you?
I find this title interesting, because for me it evokes a concept involving reference distortion, like Philip K. Dick, and his posthumous biography, Je suis vivant et vous êtes morts [I’m alive and you’re dead], written by Emmanuel Carrère. But over and above that, and more broadly, this title opens up a window on our perception of what we call reality and the status granted to the true and the false. In our day and age, fleeting at every level, this title might imply that there is a third world well beyond what exists and what doesn’t exist, and that this third world is in the end of the day the one that tacitly governs us; I quite agree, it is possible to get glimpses of this world through different practices; art is one of them.

What does art help you accomplish?
Art doesn’t help me accomplish anything very precise, but it certainly enables me to give some meaning to that psychic Robinson Crusoe status which I feel I’m living in, with the Facebook network as the main social existence. In a word, I feel a bit like the character in J.G.Ballard’s book, The Concrete Island.
