International Festival of Art Schools

EDITO 2012

As befits a festival named after the spring, the Printemps has always been particularly attentive to young artists everywhere. It was therefore very logical for it to take a closer a look at what is going on in art schools, those crucibles of new art. Hence the idea, first developed in 2011, of asking the directors of these institutions to recommend the work of students reaching the end of their studies, or recently graduated alumni.

We believe that art schools are (still) special places where it is allowed to make mistakes and put in place real learning in the confrontation of ideas and models. Now threatened by the obsessive administrating and leveling of all kinds imposed on them, these places resist: networks are put in place, reforms are an opportunity for a greater mobility within Europe, and schools continue to offer aspiring artists a rich ground of experiences.

In 2011, we invited a number of schools to join us in this project, within the limits of our budget and available venues, in the hope that it would be possible to grow in the years to come. For the 2012 edition, ten institutions have responded to our invitation: the Institut supérieur des arts de Toulouse (IsdaT), the École Supérieure d’Art des Rocailles in Biarritz; The Fresnoy- Studio national des arts contemporains, Tourcoing; the Facultad de Bellas Artes, Cuenca; the Künstakademie Düsseldorf; the Royal College of Art, London; the Academy of Fine Arts and Design (Ljubljana); the Kunsthogskolen Oslo; the International Academy of Art of Palestine in Ramallah; the IUAV (Venice).

This is an opportunity for young artists to position themselves in relation to the work of their more experienced and, in some cases, very well known elders, within the framework of the Printemps de Septembre, of which the International Festival of Art Schools is now an integral part. It is from comparisons such as these that artists, whatever their status, draw stimulation and encouragement, and not from modes of evaluation imported from other fields.
