Joel Pete Witkin, Vanity, New Mexico, 1990

Born in 1939, he lives in the United States.

Witkin shows a personal universe on the edge of a nightmare, a world in silent suffering. His work, often disturbing, is deeply religious and the monstrous bodies are a hymn to the beauty of all divine creatures. He works with staging and all these paintings are carefully scenographed : impossible to distinguish what is "true" from what reveals the staging.

A wise composition with countless references to the history of painting.
