Yasumasa Morimura, Self-portrait (Actress) after Brigitte Bardot 2, 1996

ilfochrome/Framed, acrylique sheet, 120 x 95cm

courtesy Yosshiko Isshiki & galerie Nishida, Tokyo

Born in 1951 in Osaka (Japan), he lives and works there.

Yasuma Morimura constantly blurs the boundaries of culture, gender and sexual identity, and clearly poses the question of authorship by putting himself in the shoes and universe of different characters. It also speaks of the search for identity in both Japanese society and contemporary Japanese art.

Each time, they are like Hollywood pictures, with their perfect reconstruction. They are paintings in which his self-portrait is replayed through different codes of representation from the history of modern and contemporary popular culture.
