Born in 1940 in Tokyo (Japan), he lives there.

An emblematic figure of contemporary Japanese photography, Araki has for years been accumulating countless photos in the form of "image diaries". Portraits, landscapes, architectural views, still lifes and erotic scenes are juxtaposed in a compulsive vertigo, which consists of a sort of permanent reportage on Japanese identity between tradition and modernity, rigidity and deviance.
