Born in 1966 in Malmö (Sweden), she lives and works in Stockholm.

Following her studies in Sweden, and her recent photographs and video works (Somewhere Else, Confront me back, or Driven) shown mainly in Sweden and Germany, Maria Friberg presents for the first time in Cahors Blown Out (1999), a slow and silent video projection showing a man with a beardless body and a shaved head, submerged by a milky sea and then finally catching his breath. This 1999 work in San Francisco, which shares the viewer between strangeness and voluptuousness, deals with fears and the desire to "let go" beyond mental and bodily boundaries - whether "through love, passion, or death".
