Born in 1959 in Amstel (Holland), she lives and works in Amsterdam.

Trained at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, Marijke van Warmerdam has developed her work as a sculptor and then as a video artist since the 1990s, exhibited notably at the Venice Biennale in 1997. Her 16mm films, presented in relatively bright spaces with a visible projector, avoid narration, anecdote or psychological emphasis. The subject is always a simple looped action or situation (a bear in front of a door, a man taking a shower; two trucks, one orange, the other green, followed by the camera...), while the piece can be seen as an object, in a suspended time.

The work Skytypers (1997), made from white smoke traced by five aeroplanes in the sky, appears as an abstract painting in movement, with an impalpable beauty.
