Born in 1972 in Helsinki, she lives and works in Paris.
Elina Brotherus belongs to the new generation of Nordic artists who have broken away from the traditional attachment to regional landscapes and who also reject a certain immutable conception of the documentary. In her highly acclaimed Suites françaises I and II, Elina Brotherus examined the situation of a foreigner, a young Finnish woman struggling with a language and culture very different from her own.
In Toulouse, she is exhibiting two new series of photographs, as well as some images from Suites françaises II that have never been shown in France before. The suite entitled Miroir (2000) is a meditation on the self. Femme à sa toilette (2001) and Homme derrière un rideau (2001) enter the world of a young woman whose self-portrait tells of her self-discovery.
