Shimon Attie

Exhibition — Couvent des Jacobins

Born in 1957 in Los Angeles, he lives and works in New York.

The photographer's eye is manifest in the quality of the light on the forms, the rendering of shadow. This light is a source of ambiguity. Are we close in on a body or facing a sand dune? Between these paintings come sequences that alternates between serenity and agitatation. And the sound score (more music than noise) parallels all this, sometimes underscoring the sense of realism and sometimes completely at odds with the image. Voices are heard, often whisperings, barely understandable. But everything becomesmeaningful in the last shot, a slow rearwards tracking movement, moving from a close-up to an establishing shot that shows us the real world and, at the same time, the autobiographical nature of the work.
