Born in 1976 in Gap (France), Lives in Montreux.
The manipulation of photographs has often been bound up with irony, the interplay of double meanings and the need to alter the depiction of reality. Mathieu Bernard-Reymond uses digital imagery precisely to usher back in the ambiguity that exists between the depiction of reality and the re-creation of make-believe.
In the series showed at le Printemps de septembre, Intervalles (2000-2002), the artiste uses the technique of simple editing. Each picture brings together different views of the same place – what is on the whole involved is non places, bland, anodyne spaces, devised for leisure activities – with the same framing. The result is a set of disconserting pictures, full of ambiguity and secrecy.
