Born in 1961 in Istanbul, he lives between London and Barcelona.

Not long ago, documentary was limited to the fields of communication and information. In recent years, however, it has infiltrated the field of contemporary art and the art market. Kutlug Ataman, who is known for his work on identity, is one of a number of independent filmmakers who prefer to present their works in circuits that are more receptive to products which appeal to a relative minority, such as museums, galleries and cultural institutions.

At the festival he is presenting one of his latest video installations, 1+1=1 (2002). In this double-screen projection, a Turkish-Cypriot poet living in the Greek half of the island speaks to the camera about his life. The piece deals with both the social and political situation of modern Turkey and the conflict over Cyprus.
