Rochelle Costi takes an abiding interest in traces of human presence. In the Quartos (Rooms) series, made at the end of the 1980s, she photographed rooms vacated by their occupants but filled with objects evoking their presence. Costi observes the walls as they transpire human essence. In her photographs of shelters built from recuperated materials and bits of junk or houses with their doors and windows walled in, she is once again observing houses turning into metaphors, but this time their message concerns urban fragility and the opacity of certain social structures.
