Born in Morschwiller (France), she lives in France.
Working since 1992 exclusively in video, Sylvie Blocher seeks to capture those moments when people let go, leaving body and soul defenceless. In this series, the artist follows an unchanging protocol, putting a set of questions to people she encounters by chance or recruits with classified ads. The ambiguity of the questions sometimes gives rise to a feeling of emotional instability and unease conducive to a loss of control and inhibitions.
In the video Are you a Masterpiece? Blocher questions American footballers about art, beauty, the sublime, the gods, power and money. The “gravity” of the subjects broached contrasts with the appearance of these men who are barely recognisable behind the “mask” of their gear.
