By turning the logic of surveillance and control authorities back on the authorities themselves, Jules Spinatsch exposes the forces which govern our reality. This photographer and video-maker has come to notice as a result of the series and book titled Temporary Discomfort, winner of many awards, including the Prix du Livre in Arles. This work, which was produced during summits of the great world powers (G8, World Economic Forums), breaks with the model of photojournalism. Spinatsch does not actually record the event, but rather the context in which it arises, with a preference for opening up the field of view and the sweeping gaze. This process is renewed in Heisenbergs Abseits (2006), where the action of a football match is reported without the football ever making an appearance. Political critique thus goes hand-in-hand with calling the news media into question.
