Dora Garcia

09.24.10 - 10.17.10
Exhibition — BBB centre d'art

Dora Garcia is also performing Quel putain de merveilleux public at BBB art centre.

Born in 1965 in Valladolid (Spain), she lives in Barcelona (Spain).

The BBB becomes, on the occasion of the Printemps de Septembre, the theatre of various operations. Four performances/exhibitions by the artist Dora Garcia, some of them interactive, with writing and video as the main media, are presented throughout the festival.

Instant Narrative

Instant Narrative is an observer (performer) stationed in the exhibition hall who types on a laptop. He could be a guard, a mediator or someone who works in the art centre in some way. He writes and writes, seemingly without looking up as the viewer walks by. Unconcerned, the viewer continues his or her visit and is faced with a projected text that, to the viewer's surprise, speaks of him or her, the way he or she moves, dresses, looks, makes assumptions about his or her social position, his or her interactions with others and with the exhibition hall, and even his or her thoughts at that moment.

The Notebook

A person writes in a notebook. She writes everything down: everything that comes to mind and everything that happens in the room where she is writing while she is writing. This manic recording has obvious consequences for her own actions and reactions, for her physical needs and for her relationship with others. This is why, at a certain point, she decides to stop writing.
In the exhibition space there is a table and a stool. On one side of the table is a pile of filled notebooks, on the other a pile that has yet to be filled. On the surface of the table you can read the instructions for activating the piece: "Choose a notebook that has not yet been used. Sit down, open the notebook and start writing. Write down everything that crosses your mind, everything you hear, smell, everything you remember. It is not possible to correct what is already written and you cannot stop. The moment you stop, even for a moment, writing, the performance is over. Close the notebook and place it on the pile of written notebooks."

The Messenger

A messenger has to deliver a message of great importance, but first he has to find the person who can understand the message. A young woman learns by heart a message in a language she does not understand or identify. She has to find someone among the inhabitants of Toulouse who can understand this language. "LeMessager" is therefore the story of a search. The performance ends when the
The performance ends when the messenger and the receiver of the message meet and reveal the meaning of the mission. The performance can therefore last for hours or even years.

Proxy/Coma

A video camera films a woman. She agrees because the presence of the camera is proof of the value of her existence. The increase in recorded time is equal to the decrease in the time she has left to live.
A young woman (Proxy) lives in a room. She has been instructed only to stay within the range of a camera set up in the same room. The camera records two films a day which are stored in the library in an adjacent room; this library (Coma) grows throughout the performance. In this room, one of the recorded tapes is selected and projected onto a screen: the image is identical to what is happening in the next room.
