Since its creation, the festival has always been attentive to young international artists. It was only natural that it should take a closer look at what is happening in art schools, the crucibles where artistic creation is developed. Hence the idea of asking the heads of these schools to propose works by students who are at the end of their studies or who have recently completed their studies.
We believe that art schools are (still) exceptional places, where it is allowed to make mistakes and where real learning takes place, through the confrontation of ideas and models. Today threatened by the managerial obsession and the levelling of all kinds that are imposed on them, these places are resisting: networks are being set up, the reforms are providing an opportunity for greater circulation within Europe, and the schools continue to offer aspiring artists a rich field of experience.
We have undertaken to offer a few schools the opportunity to launch this project with us, within the limits of available space and budget, in the hope that it will be possible to develop it in the years to come. Thanks to the invaluable assistance of Michel Métayer, director of the Toulouse School of Fine Arts, we have relied on the partner schools of the Toulouse School of Fine Arts: Düsseldorf, Ramallah, Brunswick and Weimar. We see this as an opportunity for young artists to be confronted with the work of more experienced, and even well-known, artists, within the framework of the Printemps, of which the International Festival of Art Schools is now an integral part. It is this type of confrontation that nourishes artists, whatever their status, and not evaluation methods borrowed from other fields than art.
