Since its foundation, the Printemps de Septembre has always felt it was important to regularly renew itself. In 2013, it is metamorphosing, with new directors, new dates, a new concept and a new name. The first ambition of the renamed Festival International d’Art de Toulouse is to bring the artist to the fore: ARTIST COMES FIRST. The artistic direction is now decided by a permanent committee of international art world figures* chosen for their distinctive careers. They are thus in a position to develop a far-sighted vision and work for the long-term, consolidating the identity of the event with each new edition. The Festival’s main exhibition trail is now concentrated around the River Garonne, in magnificent heritage sites of the city of Toulouse. Les Jacobins, the Château d’Eau, the Hôtel-Dieu, the Port-Viguerie, the Fondation Bemberg, Les Abattoirs (to be joined next year by the Musée des Augustins and Espace EDF Bazacle) will be the setting for exhibitions by Tony, Kiki and Seton Smith, Lindsay Seers, Emmanuel Van der Meulen, Howard Hodgkin, Julian Rosefeldt and Richard Buckminster Fuller. At weekends, the main courtyard of the Institut Supérieur des Arts de Toulouse will become the lively, friendly festival base camp, hosting discussions with artists, public events, and also concerts during the Nocturnes. Keeping an eye on the younger contemporary scene, and eager to maintain its collaborations with the surrounding area, the Festival has asked Lieu-Commun, La Fondation Espace Écureuil (a festival partner), BBB centre d’art and Espace Croix-Baragnon, gathered under the common name A COMME ASSOCIÉS, to conceive a programme in line with this concept. Echoing its programming around the Garonne, in metropolitan Toulouse the Festival is partnering with Pavillon Blanc Centre d’Art de Colomiers to present an exhibition by Spanish artist Jordi Colomer. In the Midi-Pyrénées region, residencies at the Caza d’Oro gave Gary Hill and Allan Packer a chance to appropriate the spectacular site of Le Mas d’Azil. The Fondation Cartier’s Nomadic Nights will this year be concentrating on a project devised by artist Jean-Michel Alberola for Port Viguerie and a concert by the Texan singer Chrysta Bell, a talent revealed by David Lynch. More attentive than ever to the quality of its public programmes, the Festival is offering workshops, guided tours, discussions with artists, trails with commentaries, plus the presence of mediators on all exhibition sites: all under the aegis of the Centre Photographique de Lectoure.

It is with the precious support and confidence of our partners, foremost among them the City of Toulouse, that the Festival is changing direction in such a short time frame. We thank them warmly. We hope that you will share our ever-fresh enthusiasm for art and artists at this first Festival International d’Art de Toulouse and look forward to seeing you all on 24 May !
