The point of encounter between East and West, the silk road travelled by caravans loaded with spices and perfumes still inhabits our imaginary. Long closed to the Western world, this route has become a practical reality once again over the last twenty-odd years with the intensification of the oil trade between the Middle East and China and Chinese exports towards Europe. New Silk Road by Gulnara Kasmalieva and Muratbek Djumaliev gives us reflections on their native Kirghizstan, a former Soviet republic which became independent 25 years ago and is located along the middle of this 10,000 miles route. For her part, Nadine Boller films Kirghiz nomads trying to pick up a phone connection at an altitude of over 3,000 yards, while Meka Muratova sets out on her bike from her city, Bischkek, for Osh, Kashgar, Urumshi, Xian and Beijing, in order to pursue this “Road of infinity” further east.
