Exhibition — Espace EDF Bazacle

bertien van manen, portraits de famille à toulouse, 2003

photographie numérique

commande du centre national des arts plastiques, paris

Born in 1942 in The Hague (Netherlands), he lives in Amsterdam.

A photographer who travels, Bertien van Manen has been unanimously acclaimed for her work on Russia and China. Her profound personal commitment and the privileged relations she has developed with her subjects generally means she can get access where most foreigners will be barred.

For this year’s festival, she is working on a special commission concerning the different immigrant communities of Toulouse. The relationship with her subjects is established by using family photos, which the artist puts back in the home and photographs in context. The background and history of these individuals cut off from their country of origin can thus be read through the images.

Commissioned by the Centre National des Arts Plastiques, Paris.
