Teresa Hubbard

Born in 1965 in Dublin, she lives in Austin (USA).

Alexander Birchler

Born in 1962 in Baden (Switzerland), he lives in Austin (USA).

These two European-born artists have developed their most important work in the USA, where they have recently shown a selection of their video works at the Whitney Museum in New York. This is one of the first times that the two photographers and video artists have been shown in France, with their video installation Single Wide being shown at Les Abattoirs.

A single, six minute shot takes us around the interior of a house which appears to have been abruptly deserted. This scene looks like the setting for a drama but we cannot know whether it has already unravelled or is yet to begin. The décor and the scene's structure are a Hitchcockian metaphor for psychological tension and drama. In annihilating all distinctions between interior and exterior, real and artificial, light and shadow, cause and effect, Hubbard and Birchler plunge the viewer into a kind of existential conflict which borders on vertigo.
