David C. Johannet

Carpaccio
09.23.06
Performance — Jardin Raymond VI

Premiered in 2000, this performance Carpaccio was the first collaboration between Andrew Sharpley and David C. Johannet. Using excerpts from recent Hollywood films, they take apart the characters and actions of the industry’s emblematic actors and transpose them into musical compositions. By cutting the original sequences “super-fine” and putting them into elaborate montages, they come up with new sequences or digital pastiches that have their own narrative rhythm.

The English musician Andrew Sharpley is one of the founding members of Stock, Hausen & Walkman, one of the most important experimental electronic music groups of the 1990s. He is also a member of the Mami Chan Band and has worked with many other musicians, among them Noël Akchoté. The graphic designer and video artist David C. Johannet began working on the interactions between image and sound in digital video in 1999. His video works have been shown in numerous festival and cultural venues.

Carpaccio was commissioned by the Musée d’Art Moderne et Contemporain de Strasbourg.
