The Rehearsal stages a rehearsal. Or perhaps the rehearsal of a rehearsal. This thing within a thing – mise en abîme – is the point of departure of a spectacle whose complex structure is based on dramaturgical procedures that are extremely simple, where the issue of true and false is a pretext for revealing an inventive and poetic world, giving pride of place to the absurd and the burlesque.

What does the festival’s subtitle “Here where I am doesn’t exist” mean to you?
I have this sleeping problem which means that I can’t stop sleeping. If somebody doesn’t wake me up, or an alarm clock doesn’t go off, I can sleep for many hours on the trot. And this means that lots of hours are spent dreaming, one dream after another, and so on and so forth… I have the feeling of living connected to the “matrix”. Sometimes, I’m not sure if I know if the real world is this one or the one I’ve been dreaming about. In my play The Real Fiction, we were re-enacting a scene from the film Matrix, where Morpheus is on the phone with Trinity and gives him the address for getting away from the matrix. In The Rehearsal, this same scene is re-enacted, but this time on the basis of the rehearsal of The Real Fiction. The actress María Jerez acts by addressing me as if I were in stage, but I’m in the auditorium, looking at the stage. Now I’m at home, writing these words.
