“You only need two hours to become a Butoh dancer”: a few years after he spoke these possibly throwaway words, Xavier Le Roy was challenged by his friend Boris Charmatz to create a Butoh dance in only two hours. He chose to take up the challenge and soon found himself getting absorbed in the process of research and creation. In telling the story of this solitary process of learning about a dance and culture that were alien to him, Le Roy manages the feat of getting spectators to share in both its physical and mental dimensions. On the way he pays a magnificent homage to the practice and its great masters, and also reveals the questions surrounding contemporary modes of artistic production.
