France électronique takes an interest in France's visual arts' electronic imaginary by placing side by side two periods (1977-1989/today).

Whether this brings to mind certain television shows' opening titles – so often watched and yet removed from our mental radars – or a set of musical productions that don't fit into the dominant history of popular culture, we come to the idea that there is a specifically French way of bonding with this electronic culture.

Like Vasarely, who collaborated with IBM to develop an abstract image synthesizer or Nicholas Schöffer who rethought art and the city through cybernetic inspiration. The research led on this electronic culture immerses one in a country obsessed with technical progress, where a synthetic culture that crosses over music and design as much as the technology then referred to by the dated term "telematic” is developed. The 1980's are a great futuristic moment in culture's history, having been witness to the development of networks, 3D animation, computer-generated imagery, electronic music.

France électronique is a double exhibition, structured around the juxtaposition of two periods: “The Synthetic Years” (1977-1989) and “Artificial imagination”. “The Synthetic Years” brings together works made by means of computers as well as a set of audio-visual documents that showcase the broadcasting of technological ideals. “Artificial Imagination” presents creations produced specifically for the exhibition that are oriented towards what machines do to imagination and illustrate the disappearance of distinction between digital and visual art in the work of today's artists.

Founded in 2010 by Brice Domingues, Jérôme Dupeyrat and Catherine Guiral, the agence du doute — in the context of "France électronique", and in particular of "Les années synthèses" — was joined by display designer Camille Platevoet and graphic designer Maxime Delavet.

Exhibition realised in partnership with isdaT – institut supérieur des arts de Toulouse and with the collaboration of the Institut National de l’Audiovisuel (INA).
